Though fragmentary and covering only the first twenty-five years of Preston's life, these reminiscences are of rare value, throwing interesting sidelights on many phases of early nineteenty-century life and characterizing important political and literary figures of the period. Preston was typical of the upper-class southerner--wealthy, well-born, and well-educated.
