It\u003cbr\u003e\nwill help designers to understand the possibilities of\u003cbr\u003e\nsmart textile production, so that they are enabled to\u003cbr\u003e\ndesign this type of products. It will also help textile\u003cbr\u003e\nand electronics manufacturers to understand which\u003cbr\u003e\nproduction technologies are suitable to meet certain\u003cbr\u003e\nproduct requirements.\u003cbr\u003e\nAfter an introduction to smart textiles and their market\u003cbr\u003e\nrelevance, different material types for functional\u003cbr\u003e\ntextiles are described along with their properties,\u003cbr\u003e\napplication areas, and product examples. Special\u003cbr\u003e\nattention is given to materials for the realization of\u003cbr\u003e\nelectrical conductivity in textiles, as these are crucial\u003cbr\u003e\nfor the following overview on sensor and production\u003cbr\u003e\ntechnologies. Next, textile-based sensors are\u003cbr\u003e\nintroduced. While numerous textile-based sensors,\u003cbr\u003e\nranging from sensing fibers to coatings and three-dimensional\u003cbr\u003e\nstructures, have been developed, their\u003cbr\u003e\nspecific properties and usage are not clear. Bosowski\u003cbr\u003e\net al. have suggested a structure for a classified catalogue\u003cbr\u003e\nas knowledge basis to support the smart textile\u003cbr\u003e\nproduct development process. This chapter develops\u003cbr\u003e\nthe classification further and implements it in a catalogue\u003cbr\u003e\nto be used by practitioners from research and\u003cbr\u003e\nindustry when developing and designing textiles with\u003cbr\u003e\nsensing capabilities.
